It is often said that the exact phrase “First do no harm” is a part of the original Hippocratic oath. Although the phrase “pumum non noncore” is believed to date back from the 17th century, it is still widely used today. The United Methodist Church, in fact, in it’s 3 Basic Rules, encourages people to “Do no harm and abstain from all intentional wrong-doing and harm.”
It is surprising then to discover that this phrase is now attributed and being questioned with the use of oats in foods. Surprisingly, food scientists have found that oats manufactured and sold by many major food companies may contain dangerous pesticides. (a definite eye-opener for and lovers of oatmeal and oatmeal meal raisin cookies the like.)
What’s going on? Food scientists have recently found dangerous levels of pesticide glyphosate in popular oat products. Now pesticide glyphosate is the same carcinogenic chemical found in products such as Monsanto’s Roundup, proven to cause many health conditions in individuals. It’s thought that pesticides used in agriculture have finally come into detectable levels to threaten our food supply and particularly the supply of oats to the public. Pesticide glyphosate, although below regulatory levels set by the EPA, still is seen in noticeable amounts when it comes to oats.
Are oats with detectable levels of glyphosate truly safe? Do they harm…or do they do not harm? The question continues, and it also allows us to hunt for oats and oat products that are glyphosate free. So, the next time you shop for oats in your local supermarket, take a look for oat products that label themselves as being glyphosate-free. This way, we can all return to the healthy qualities of oats
